The region’s experiences on the path to open science were discussed in the fourth edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Open Science Forum – CILAC – in the virtual space “Data and open science: training experiences in Latin America”. The forum, organised by LA-CoNGA Physics, brought together representatives of organisations and initiatives united in the effort to build a new model of science in the region, with an open and collaborative spirit. In addition to LA-CoNGA physics, represented by Reina Camacho Toro, the organisations present to discuss the experiences and challenges of open science in the region were: MetaDocencia (Irene Vazano), Creative Commons Venezuela (Arturo Sánchez), Openlab Ecuador (Francisco Silva) and RedCLARA (Carlos González). The forum was moderated by Ysabel Briceño from the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (Colombia).

During the forum, each of the organisations shared how best practices related to open science have been developed in Latin America, a necessary but disruptive trend given the way in which science has shaped its habits in the 20th century. In this context, the invited panel discussed some of the initiatives that have come together to create a community in the region, and in which each organisation has played a role in contributing to the theme discussed. Capacity building, infrastructure, shared resources and citizens’ initiatives were some of the issues raised.

Towards the end, the invited team highlighted the road that still needs to be travelled in the field of Open Science in Latin America and confirmed the need to create alliances to strengthen each of the experiences.
